The standard defines specific test intervals: quarterly or semi-annual visual inspections, annual functional testing of all devices, and quarterly testing of control equipment and batteries.
Annually, a licensed technician must functionally test every device in the system: smoke detectors are challenged with test smoke, heat detectors are heated, pull stations are activated, and notification appliances are verified to sound and flash.
The technician also tests the signal transmission to your central station (if monitored), verifies battery voltage and charger function, and documents all results on an NFPA 72 test record.
Quarterly inspections focus on control panel functions, battery tests, and visual checks of accessible devices. Semi-annual inspections may apply to specific device types depending on your system and occupancy.
These interim inspections catch problems like dead batteries, dirty detectors, and panel trouble signals before the annual test.
NFPA 72 requires that all inspection and test records be retained and available for AHJ review. Records must include the date, inspector, devices tested, test results, and any deficiencies found.
