Emergency Lighting Code Requirements for Oklahoma City Commercial Properties

Emergency lighting is required by NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code) and the International Fire Code for all commercial properties with occupied spaces. This guide explains what Oklahoma City businesses need to know about code requirements, testing intervals, and documentation.

    What code requires emergency lighting?

NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code) and the International Fire Code both require emergency lighting in commercial occupancies. The lighting must illuminate exit routes so occupants can evacuate safely during a power failure.

Oklahoma adopts both standards through the State Fire Marshal's Office, and local AHJs enforce compliance during fire marshal inspections.

    Placement and coverage requirements

Emergency lighting must illuminate all egress paths, including hallways, stairwells, exit doors, and changes of direction. The minimum illumination level is typically 1 foot-candle at the floor level.

Exit signs must be illuminated at all times — either by internal battery-backed lighting or by a reliable external power source with battery backup.

    Testing and documentation requirements

NFPA 101 requires monthly 30-second function tests and annual 90-minute full-duration tests. Both must be documented with the date, test result, and any deficiencies found.

Oklahoma City Fire Protection performs the annual 90-minute test and documents results for your fire marshal and insurance carrier. Monthly 30-second tests can be performed by trained building staff.
