The standard defines specific inspection intervals: quarterly visual inspections of control valves and alarm devices, annual main drain and waterflow alarm tests, and 5-year internal piping inspections and sprinkler head samples.
Every quarter, a licensed technician must visually inspect control valves to confirm they are in the normal open position, check tamper switches, and verify alarm devices. Fire department connections (FDCs) are inspected for accessibility and condition.
Quarterly inspections are visual — no water is discharged. They catch problems like closed valves, missing caps, or obstructed access before they become serious.
Annually, the technician performs a main drain test to verify water supply pressure and flow, a waterflow alarm test to confirm the alarm activates when water flows, and a full visual inspection of all sprinkler heads for damage, corrosion, and proper clearance.
These tests physically exercise the system to confirm it will perform during a fire. Results are documented on an NFPA 25 test report and must be available for AHJ review.
Every 5 years, NFPA 25 requires an internal inspection of piping and a representative sample of sprinkler heads to check for obstruction, corrosion, and debris buildup. This is a more invasive inspection that may require opening selected pipe sections.
Oklahoma enforces this 5-year requirement through the State Fire Marshal, and the inspection must be documented like all other NFPA 25 tests.
